class="GiveawayPanel">We’re giving away 2 full licenses of CoPilot Live (North America) at random to those who comment below!
style="font-weight: normal;">(Tested using an HTC Evo running Android 2.2)
/> Pros & Cons:
Pros
Maps are downloaded directly onto your SD card so navigation features work even without a wireless connection as long as GPS in enabled
Multi-stop trips
Lane assist eliminates confusion in unfamiliar multi-lane high traffic areas
Additional maps are available for other countries such as Europe, UK, Australia, and more
Route recalculation is quick and seamless
Cons
HUGE download. The North America region download for this app is almost 2GB stored to your SD card
No voice search feature. One of the most used functions on my Evo with the 2.2 upgrade.
Features:
CoPilot Live is a great app for anyone who finds themselves using GPS navigation often. This, of course, coming from someone who uses
title="Google Maps Navigation Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/google-maps-navigation/">Google Maps often, having the offline capability was a huge plus! CoPilot sets itself apart from other navigation softwares by simply offering many services you would normally find only on a dedicated GPS device. Even better, you have more than one voice to choose from rather than the standard TTS voice (which on long trips can get annoying and causes use of the mute button) your given using Google Maps. This application is available on Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows Mobile. On your desktop, you can customize a variety of features for CoPilot Live using the free Windows software called
title="CoPilot Central" href="http://www.alk.com/copilot/central/">CoPilot Central, also available from
title="ALK" href="http://www.alk.com/">ALK.
There are several versions you can buy of this app (All available in the Android Market): North America, South Africa, UK + Ireland, Europe, and Australia. Using this app I only tested the North American maps in their most current form.
Key Features:
Accurate navigation to either house number or street level
Quick re-routing when needed. I’m no longer nervous about missing a turn! Pre-loaded maps allows on the SD this to be possible.
Several different views for navigation to choose from (2D, 3D, and Driver Safety)
Enhancements such as speed limit indicator and lane indicator display just makes using this app that much safer
Works in either landscape or portrait mode
Thousands of POIs available for North America (almost too much to handle!)
Share location via SMS. Cool feature to let your loved ones know where you are.
Navigation available either by car, motorcycle, bicycle, RV, or walking. (I only tested the car method but feel free to send me a motorcycle or RV!)
Download maps for several areas on one SD card
Live Services (see below)
Live Services:
CoPilot offers a variety of different premium services that requires a data connection. Not all services are available in all areas. These are:
Live Weather: Choice of local weather, at destination, or in another city (either Fahrenheit or Celsius). Provided you with current and 5-day outlook including highs & lows with weather conditions for the day. Clicking any of the 5 days will send you externally to AccuWeather’s websites.
LiveLink: I was unfortunate enough not to get to try this out but it sounds very interesting. In theory, you would share you location with others either via their CoPilot Live application on-screen or via email to others through the
title="CoPilot LiveLink" href="https://live.alk.com/">CoPilot LiveLink website. I could see this being very useful amongst a group of travellers, only if everyone had the same application installed.
Live Traffic: Shows any traffic-related incident in the area. Throughout my usage, I typically found construction as the items it provided me with. It separates this in two formats: via Map or via list of major highways effected. You can choose to automatically avoid the incident or select it manually.
Live Fuel Prices: Shows the prices of nearby gas stations. Great information but no way to change whether the information is sorted by price or distance without going into the settings. Does allow you to be specific on the grade of fuel and the search radius.
Live Local Search: Find different items of interest either nearby or in another city. Google Search SPOILS me so I was not impressed with the functionality of this feature. Area of improvement for sure.

Usefulness:
CoPilot is great for those who do a lot of traveling. This application feels like it wasn’t designed for just your average trip across town, however, it could easily be used for any destination no matter how far away it may be. Offline usage is a
style="text-decoration: underline;">huge advantage and makes traveling in areas with limited cellular signal much easier. The additional services that CoPilot offers makes trips less of a headache and more enjoyable for you and your family.
Ease of Use:
Being used to Google Maps, this app takes on a different approach to how to use navigation software. It resembles a dedicated GPS device heavily so if your used to that platform, this should be a breeze.
Frequently Used:
If you need directions to an unfamiliar area, want up-to-date information on your common routes, or plan or traveling further than your own internal-brain-navigation can handle, this will be used often. Even though I know the route to work, I used it everyday just to keep updated on traffic.
Interface:
All icons and text is large and easily readable on the screen. Menus are a bit excessive at times but that can be viewed from a positive and negative standpoint. Lots of options and settings means lots of way to customize your experience with this app.
Battery Life (Updated):
This was one of my main concerns with this app (and all GPS nav apps for that matter). I’m happy to report that battery life with this application was minimal! During most trips, I saw about half the battery usage I normally see using Google Maps or Sprint Navigation. I guess it makes a big difference to not be connected to the internet the entire time. In fact, a couple of times I used this application turning my mobile internet off completely and had no issues aside from not being able to use Live Services. Very pleased with this app’s battery usage!
Should you Download

Pros & Cons:
Pros
Fun and challenging game
Responsive controls
Cons
The spin-off of popular iPhone game
title="Fruit Ninja" href="http://www.fruitninja.com/">Fruit Ninja, it’s missing a lot of cool features like bombs, various play modes, choice in the sword type, etc.
Features:
Ninja Kaka Fruit Dojo is a fun and challenging game of strategically using your Ninja slicing skills to chop random fruit stacking up points to advance to the next level under a timer. The key is slice in higher number combos without misses, a miss or no cuts in the higher rounds result in points taken away, and the speed of the game increases making it more challenging.
How to Play Ninja Kaka Fuit Dojo
Swipe in any direction on the screen to slice the fruit, recommended to slice at least 3 or more pieces with every strike without missing.
Each round has a timer and point threshold to beat, hence combo slices are vital
Each advance in rounds get even tougher as the game speed increases

Fun Factor & Addictive:
Though it’s a simple game it’s really fun, addictive and can get quite challenging as you’re not just slicing fruit but figuring out the best way to slice 3 or more without missing to maximize points.
Graphics:
The game features smooth & delicious fruit splattered 3D game graphics and is very responsive on Android devices with higher processor speeds.
With 4G becoming the next big thing, Sprint is now adding to it’s line up the
title="Samsung Epic 4G" href="http://www.samsungmobileusa.com/GalaxyS/#/epic/&cid=us_160_nshltr_sprint_galaxys_201008">Samsung Epic 4G. All the major U.S. cellular providers are releasing their own personal version of the
title="Samsung Galaxy S Launched at CTIA Wireless" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/samsung-galaxy-s-launched-at-ctia-wireless/">Samsung Galaxy S. They all are somewhat similar, but here comes Sprint, not only providing 4G but also with a physical keyboard. Launching today, the Epic 4G might be just what you’re looking for…maybe…
After playing with the Epic’s cousin the
title="Sprint Launches 4G HTC Evo" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/sprint-launches-4g-htc-evo/">EVO and it’s brother the
title="Samsung Captivate Android Smart Phone for AT&T" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/samsung-captivate-android-smart-phone-for-att/">Captivate (AT&T’s take on the Galaxy S) I had some idea of what to expect when I got my hands on the Epic. However, overall I wasn’t as blown away as I thought I would be. I still have some issues with the Samsung UI. It feels like they were staring at iPhones too long and came up with a non-Apple version of the same thing.
The phone itself is….nice. I found myself using the onscreen
title="Swype Keyboard Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/swype/">Swype Keyboard more than the physical one. The physical keyboard however is nice compared to some others. It has generous spacing between keys so you don’t slam 5 buttons at once and there’s enough travel that you know you’ve hit something.
Size
Dimensions: 4.9″ x 2.54″ x 0.56″
Weight 5.46 oz.
I always expect a phone with a physical keyboard to be extremely bulky, uncomfortable to hold, and all around clunky physically. I guess the
title="DROID by Motorola for Verizon" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/droid-by-motorola/">Motorola Droid left a bad taste in my mouth. However, the Samsung Epic 4G doesn’t feel that way at all. It’s rounded corners and slightly curved back sit nicely in your hand both horizontally and vertically and it doesn’t feel nearly as heavy as I would expect. However, when I took off the back cover to put in the battery I noticed that may be due to the very flimsy plastic that is used for the case. I don’t know about the whole phone entirely, but the back cover is thin enough that it almost folds.
Display
Resolution: 480 x 800 pixels
Type: 16 77 216 colors, Super AMOLED
Physical Size: 4”in Screen
Touch Screen: Capacitive, Multitouch
The first thing I must say is that
title="Gorilla Glass" href="http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/index.aspx">Gorilla Glass should be used for all portable device screens. I love the idea that, yes you should always be careful with your devices, but to know in the back of your head that the screen is almost completely resistant to scratches bring great piece of mind. That is something I love with this phone!
The whole display actually is very nice. It’s clear, shows great color, and is easy to read. The back light is bright but not so bright it’s blinding and the screen can be easily read in bright sunlight. Videos looked pretty good and pictures were never washed out looking.
Sound
Headset: 3.5 mm Stereo Headset Jack
This is one aspect of the phone that annoyed me. During calls with both the standard ear-piece and speaker it crackled. It only crackled when it was all the way up, but I found that unless I was in an area with almost no ambient noise, I had to have it all the way up to hear people. I found myself grabbing another phone when I knew I would be talking a while and it wasn’t dead silent.
This happened with music too so I feel like the speaker is just underpowered. However, using my wired and wireless headsets the sound was loud and clear for audio.
Memory
Internal Memory: 512 MB RAM / 512MB ROM
Card Slot: microSD (16 GB included) / microSDHC
Yes, this phone is running 2.1 so 512 MB of internal memory for apps can fill up quick. However, the 2.2 Froyo update is coming relatively soon (or so they say) so that issue should be solved pretty quickly. The 16 GB card that comes with the phone is more than enough for what you want on there! Of course, that’s what we said when computers had 500 MB hard drives.
Data
Bluetooth : 2.1, Stereo Bluetooth
Wi-Fi: 802.11b/g/n
Internet: Android Browser, HTML
USB: Standard microUSB for data and charging
YAY! A phone with Wireless-N built in! Thank you! Most of the phones out there seem stuck with G, which is fine since that’s what 90% of wireless networks are, but just knowing that you can grab that newer faster, stronger, and better range network is wonderful.
My Bluetooth devices, my 2 headsets and printer, synced easily. The sound quality was very good. However, I didn’t like that I couldn’t get notification sounds through the Bluetooth.
Camera
5 MP Resolution
Video: 1280 x 720 (720pHD)
Camera Features: Flash LED Auto Focus, Smile Detection, Digital Zoom, Multi-Shot, Effects, Self-Timer, Panorama, ISO Control
For a 5 MP camera, it does very well. I love the panoramic pictures I could take and the video was very clear. The audio, again, did sound muffled on the phone, but when transfered to my computer, sounded okay, comparable to a video shot with your digital camera.
It does have a front facing camera, which is great for video conferencing. The settings to turn that camera on were in a strange place that took me about 10 minutes to find (Camera >> Shooting Mode >> Self shot). I just expected it to be a single button click away. But some crafty developer will just create an app for that (Oh, I’ll take 40% cut on that idea).
src='http://www.androidtapp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' />
Features
Phone Book: Size depends on system memory; Ring ID, Picture ID, Search by first and last name, Multiple Numbers per contact, Caller groups

title="Samsung Galaxy S Launched at CTIA Wireless" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/samsung-galaxy-s-launched-at-ctia-wireless/">Samsung Galaxy S family of Android smartphones. It was released mid July 2010 for $199 after two year agreement and data plan. We’re taking an in-depth look at the hardware, software and features on the phone.
Pros & Cons
Pros
Brilliant and beautiful 4 inch Super AMOLED screen
16 GIGABYTES of internal memory storage in addition of 2 gigabyte SD Card and expandable up to 32 gigabytes for a grand total of 48 gigabytes
Powerful processor, great for gaming and plenty of powerful Android apps
Cons
No flash for camera
No LED on front for notifications such as missed call, missed email, or missed text message
Hardware Design
The first thing many say when they see T-Mobile’s favor of the Samsung Galaxy S is, “is it an iPhone (3G)”? Though the design is strikingly similar the hardware and software totally differentiates the phone.
The Good
The screen is indescribably bright and vibrant… hence the name. It’s 4 inches of Super AMOLED touchscreen display offering good visibility even in direct sunlight. Toting a 1GHz Samsung processor it’s more than capable of high-end gaming or can handle multi-tasking hungry
title="Android Apps" href="http://www.androidtapp.com">Android apps you can throw at it!
The Vibrant takes brilliant pictures with it’s 5 megapixel camera. However it plays and shoots HD (1280x720p) video!
The Bad
I’m not sure who dropped the ball in the product design department; worse who allowed the product to go to market without a flash for the 5 megapixel camera, worst no LED notification light!
src='http://www.androidtapp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif' alt='' class='wp-smiley' /> There’s an app that tries to help with that called
title="[App] NoLED - Use the AMOLED screen for incoming notifications" href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692">NoLED, but in my experience was not good as it killed the battery since it essentially places a moving dot on a black screen when notifications are received, meaning your screen display is always on, just black color to look like it’s off.
title="Samsung Galaxy S Launched at CTIA Wireless" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/samsung-galaxy-s-launched-at-ctia-wireless/">I personally saw this line of phones debate at fall CTIA 2010, and knew that flaw would be addressed by launched but was obviously mistaken. I don’t see ex-Blackberry users who switch to the Vibrant appreciate the notification lack as that’s one of 3 top things people love about Blackberry: email, keyboard and addictive LED notification reminder.
Samsung Vibrant Apps and Samsung Custom User Interface
The Vibrant is the only phone to have the
title="Avatar Movie" href="http://www.avatarmovie.com/">Avatar movie in high quality video and sound embedded right into the device. Other pre-installed Android apps are: AllShare, Gogo,
title="Kindle for Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/kindle-for-android/">Amazon’s Kindle app,
title="Layar Reality Browser Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/layar-reality-browser/">Layar, Samsung’s Media Hub, Memo, Mini Diary and Write and Go, MobiTV,
title="Swype Keyboard Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/swype/">Swype Keyboard,
title="TeleNav GPS Navigator Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/telenav-gps-navigator/">TeleNav GPS, The Sims 3, ThinkFree Office, T-Movile Visual Voicemail and more. Not to mention it supports Microsoft Exchange email.
One of the key stand-outs is the custom user interface atop Android’s default UI… it’s sleek and provides a better user experience in virtually every menu. One feature I really like is the ability to auto-respond to incoming mobile callers by sending a text message back with one click such as, “I’ll call you later” (similar to
title="PhonePlus Callback Android App Review" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/phoneplus-callback/">PhonePlus Callback just executed better).
The Samsung Vibrant is an awesome Android smartphone, especially for iPhone converts or existing Android users who don’t necessarily need a physical keyboard. It’s power and display make it a multimedia work horse and good for video & multimedia, gaming or business productive.
Should you Buy

Usefulness:
SoundHound features are not only useful for when you don’t know that song and want to find out what it is but have serious WOW factor! Plus there are instances where you know the tune or can sing some of the lyrics but just can’t think of the song or artist… SoundHound can identify pretty accurately by that.
Ease of Use:
Easy… either click the “Tap Here” button to let the app listen to the music, you sing the lyrics, hum it, type it or say the song title.
Frequently Used:
If you’re using the freebie you’ll be capped at 5 tags a month for listen, sing and hum identification. Premium buyers get unlimited tagging.
It’s in Alpha development stage but Firefox has released their mobile web browser codenamed
title="Fennec Alpha Firefox Mobile Web Browser" href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/alpha">Fennec to the public for download and testing on Android 2.0+ and Nokia N900 smartphones. This release offers seamless web browsing experience between desktop and mobile via use of
href="https://www.mozilla.com/firefox/sync/">Firefox Sync, providing access to Awesome Bar browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, form-fill data and open tabs from multiple computers and devices.
Another really cool and convenient stand out feature is the ability to use popular resources as a base of search in the Awesome Bar. For example, type a search term in the bar and tap Twitter or Wikipedia, thus launching a search in the desired resource for that term versus you navigating to the resource then searching. The way you reveal and hide add-on features look familiar to that of another awesome mobile web browser for Android called
title="Dolphin Browser HD Android App Review" rel="bookmark" href="http://www.androidtapp.com/dolphin-browser-hd/">Dolphin Browser HD.
BTW, use the Awesome Bar and search “Android App Reviews” and see what you come up with, as it links you directly to the top most relevant search result.

Of course we’ll thoroughly evaluate the app and do a full Android app review, however initial first gripe with Fennec is the huge size it takes up (30MB+).
