I don’t know what is it with movies and endless runner games but recently almost all movie based games have belonged to that genre of gaming. Adding another movie based game to that list is the game Despicable Me: Minion Rush which has been released to promote Despicable Me 2 that is set to hit theaters sometime next month.
As the name of the game suggests, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, is an endless runner game in which the main characters are minions. At the start of the game you get a cut scene in which you have those cute minions waiting for the announcement for the minion of the month. Apparently, the whole point of the game and why minions run is to win the coveted prize of minion of the year, which is a big shiny trophy.
The gameplay of the game is similar to all endless runner games but does manage to offer some new twists such as missions, dynamic obstacles and even boss battles with characters like Vector, Menna etc. Oh and you also get different power ups during your runs that make things easier. The variety of these power ups can be increased by purchasing new power ups by either collecting in game bananas (which work as coins) or making in app purchases. You can also collect extra points in each run by committing despicable acts such as pushing other minions or destroying their work.
The controls of the game are pretty standard. You swipe your finger left or right to change lanes while swiping your finger up makes the minion jump and swiping it down makes it roll on the ground. The one thing I really liked about the game was that it pretty much holds your hand while teaching you the basic controls of the game.
The graphics of the game are quite awesome and stay true to the movie. Not only do you get colorful and cute minions to play with but the background images in the game are also well detailed and exquisite. However, it wasn’t really all that surprising as it was something that was expected from a game developed by Android gaming mogul, Gameloft.
All in all, Despicable Me: Minion Run is quite a fun game. My only complaint with the game is the constant nagging to integrate it with Facebook (integrating it with FB even grants you extra Gameloft coins). So, if you don’t mind bombarding your friend’s walls with a little bit of Despicable Me high scores, then I really think you should try this game out especially since it is available on the Play Store for totally free.
