Rumor Has It – $99 Budget Nexus 7

No, you didn’t read that wrong, you also aren’t going crazy. There are rumors spreading around now that a $99 budget version (as if $200 isn’t already budget) of the Nexus 7 spreading around. This rumor has already come up once, but then again, it took the iPad mini a couple of years worth of rumors before it actually hapenned.

This $99 Nexus 7 is said to have a 1024 x 600 resolution screen versus the 1280 x 800 screen on the $200 nexus 7. That’s not much of a difference, but yet it is when you realize that it is a difference between HD and SD. That’s not even 1024 x 768, which probably has to deal more with the dimensions of the tablet. Still, a $99 Nexus 7 would still most likely be better than any of the other budget Android tablets out that at or below that price. Still, people will buy it.

In all honesty, I’d try to get the Nexus 7 that is only $100 more, rather than the budget Nexus 7. It’s not because of it having a bigger and better processor with twice the cores, it’s because the budget nexus 7 doesn’t have an HD screen. Most people could do without the extra cores, but you should never go with a low resolution screen, if you can avoid it.

If this tablet is released, there is no doubt that Google will be in the hands of even more people. There are already $99 tablets on the market, but they are from unknown brands and are often crap. If Google put their budget tablet next to those, chances are people would go for the Google tablets.

You get what you pay for, I always go for the sweet spot in gear, not the bleeding edge stupidly expensive stuff or the bargain basement gimped gear but the higher end of midrange. That’s where fun meets value imho

  • Dimitrios-Jimmy Seymour

no, $100 isn’t much and besides the full version is probably worth the extra value.

I’d try to get the full version, but wither would be AWESOME!

I would buy full version. Better to have and not need than . . .

I would do anything to save money. ANYTHING!

I tend to put a lot of stress on my devices and personally wouldn’t probably settle for a lower performance gadget – especially if there is just a roughly $100 difference

My Nexus 7 screen broke pretty easily I thought, I just now am able to replace the screen because replacements werent originally available

The $99 Asus tablet is rumored to carry a microSD card slot, in which case, it may not be launched with Nexus branding.

I might particularly for a second device or one to share with the kids.

Better is better, $100 well spent!

  • http://twitter.com/msmir Miriam Slozberg

I would think about it but it is true that $100 is not really much these days. So probably.

I wouldn’t be interested in this

Would definitely go for the more expensive version. The down-sized one will have limitations beyond a smaller screen.

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

You think so? I could see why a lower resolution, smaller processor screen would be cheaper, don’t think there would be anything else needed to make it cheaper.

      Thanks for the comment!

I like the latest greatest technology so $100 is a pittance to be hip and cool. :)

  • Brandon Mouton

I would consider it, but I would also really look at the non-budget version and the iPad mini.

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

I love the size of the iPad Mini. Apple did a good job with that!

I am holding out for a Surface actually, but I think there will be a huge market for low-priced tablets. If I was in the market for an Android, I would at least look at the $99 model. Consider if you were buying a tablet for your kids: you could get one tablet two kids fight over constantly for $199 or two tablets for the same price and double the peace in your home.

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

Oh there already is a huge market for $99 and even $50 tablets, since they’re so easy to make cheap

  • http://twitter.com/Prosperitylink Zsolt Szabo

    I’d buy one!

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

      The budget one?

  • Romeonyc77

    Heck, I spent $649 for my Note 2…so $99 is a deal :)

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

No contract? Or did you get international unlocked

      • Romeonyc77

No contract…BUT they knocked off $20 of my monthly plan…so it was worth it.

Holly Molly it only costs around 500 bucks where I live!

  • http://www.facebook.com/JasonWest21 Jason West

I would save the $100 cuz I’m broke.

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

Yeah, there is that, and you are going to get a heck of a lot better deal than any of the other tablets at or below that price

  • http://twitter.com/amidiabetic amidiabetic (Stuart)

I think that I would prob go for the full version for its price..

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

Yeah, the Nexus 7 is cheap to begin with!

  • http://youtube.com/peter Peter Coffin

Agree 100%. I’d go $200 model, resolution matters to me. Only way I would go with the lower resolution is if I know for certainty the same battery is in both and there is a marked difference in how long it lasts.

    • http://paulshireytech.com/ Paul Shirey

Thanks for the comment Peter! As far as I know they both have the same battery, it’s just a matter of resolution and the processor. Still, some won’t realize that and go for the cheaper version just because its cheaper

  • http://twitter.com/presentersue Sue Richards

No. I’d spend the $100. It isn’t that much for new technology.
