It’s been a while since we heard of a smartphone packing the Tegra 4 processor. But ZTE U988S wants to change that by giving us a glimpse of what the future holds. When Nvidia announced its latest flagship chip the Tegra 4, we were highly impressed by its graphical prowess. It seems that manufactures were not that impressed and chose to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 processors in their flagship smartphones. Although there are a few Tegra 4 powered tablets roaming around, ZTE U988S is the first smartphone we can actually see.
The NVidia Tegra 4 with its 72 core GPU is on hell of a processor, so we fail to see what might be holding the OEMs on using it. Probably there are some heat issues or Nvidia is just not providing a great price. Whatever the reason it looks like ZTE is going past them with the ZTE U988S. The ZTE U988S is shaping up to be what may be the world’s first Tegra 4 powered smartphone. And not this is now the dumbed down Tegra 4i either this is the full show sir.
The ZTE U988S is rumored to pack a quad core Tegra 4 processor clocked at a cool 1.8 GHz speed. There will be a 5 inch full HD screen along with 3 GB of RAM and a 13 MP rear facing camera. There is supposed to be 32 GB of on board memory and the ZTE U988S is going to run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The smartphone is a hefty one when compared with the competition, coming at 8 mm thickness. Would that mean a bigger battery? We can only find that out when the ZTE U988S is officially announced with price, name and release dates. We will be watching for potential benchmarks to compare the two leading chip manufacturers.
